The second verse of the largest chapter in the Qur'an called 'al-Baqarah' - The Cow - starts with the demonstrative pronoun "that"/dhalika.
"That"/dhalika is used to refer to the essence and attributes of tangible things. The distance indicated between the listener and the object being refered to highlights and points to the Qur'ans status and elavated rank.
The normal use of demonstrative pronoun in a phrase like the one above would be "this"/hadha. However this flouting of the communicative norm is a mechanism to highlight a point and increase the communicative effect. It highlights and accenuates the message intended to be portayed here; the Qur'an, the book that is unreachable with regards to its linguistic and literary excellence, has no doubt and cannot be matched.
No other book can come close to its miraculous nature and divinity. It also refers to the Qur'an as being exceptional and distinguished - superior to anything resembling it. The demonstrative pronoun "this"/hadha would not have had the same expression and effect.
The above example in using the demonstrative pronoun "that"/dhalika is another indication of the level of accuracy and choice of words used to deliver meaning in a concise structure. It doesn't stop there as the Qur'an takes the power of the language to another level. It deliberately deviates from the norm to provide a word, sentence or inflection that is superior to the normal use and one that will point out to a message or meaning that could not be conveyed with any other word, sentence or inflection.
"Alif. La. Meem. That is the book concerning which is no doubt, a guidance for those who are conscious of God..." Qur'an 2:1-2
